Our Review: N/A

Running Time: 102 minutes

Credits Running Time: N/A

At the moment we do not have any information about Pompeii having extra footage during or after the credits.

Quality: The board and tiles are all sturdy and linen textured, which means they’re good quality, as are the wooden bits. However, I’m particularly happy with the quality of the volcano, which is something that you roll up and put on the board: it was flimsy cardstock in previous editions of this game, but now it’s a much more durable sheet of plastic. The cards are only medium-weight, but they come with a box to store them in, which is a great plus. Overall, everything is good to great quality. 5 out of 5.

Beauty: The board is an attractive isometric drawing of Pompeii, and the cards have a good graphic design, but the lava tiles are pretty plain. 4 out of 5.

Usability: Pompeii is a pretty simple game, so usability is only required to help you match up things: the cards are linked to buildings based on number and color; while the lava tiles match lava vents based on icons. It’s all perfectly easy to use. 4 out of 5.

Theming: Granted, the gameplay of Pompeii might not precisely match what happened in that poor, doomed city. However, the theming feels great, as players eagerly invite their relatives to Pompeii to see the weird things happening with the volcano, then everyone flees screaming. 5 out of 5.

Pompeii has great quality components and wonderful theming. I’ve let it eke in a full “5” out of “5” for Style.

Summary of the Gameplay

The object of The Downfall of Pompeii is to get the most people out of the city. This is done through two broad phases: first, everyone piles people into the city, then everyone tries to get them out.

Setup: To setup the game, you have to interleave AD 79 and Omen cards in the deck, which is slightly complex. Players are also each given a hand of location cards, which they’ll use to add people the city.

The Placement Phase: During the initial phase of the game, players put their people into buildings in Pompeii through the play of location cards.

At first, a player plays a card and puts one person in that location. However, after the first AD 79 card is drawn, people start calling in their relatives: after placing a person, a player now gets to add additional people based on how many people were already in the building. These people go to other buildings of the same color or to “neutral” buildings.

Eventually, the second AD 79 card will be drawn, which ends the placement phase of the game.

Omen Cards. Players may draw Omen Cards throughout this first phase of the game. When they do, they get to gleefully toss one person from another player into the volcano.

The Fleeing Phase: After the volcano erupts, players now try to get their people out of Pompeii through several city gates. Each turn now has two parts.
